A now-deleted tweet on Nokia's Indian Twitter account teased a gaming-centered smartphone. The post, which was hastily taken down, said that we should "stay tuned for a phone you can #GameOn," heavily implying that Nokia may have plans for a gaming smartphone. Given the recent rise in mobile gaming, this wouldn't be unwarranted.
Gaming phones are steadily moving from niche products to more common occurrences. While they are definitely not ubiquitous, there are about a half-dozen gaming smartphones on the market today, and Nokia might be adding one more to the ranks. A tweet on Nokia’s Indian Twitter account (now deleted) teased that the Nordic smartphone manufacturer was “ready to #GameOn.”
While we would normally chalk this up to a rumor, the fact that the tweet was broadcast on an official Nokia Twitter account may mean that the company at least has plans for a gaming smartphone. After all, there is a growing market for smartphones with gaming chops. Razer, Asus, Nubia, Huawei, and Xiaomi have all made headlines over the past year with their various takes on gaming smartphones. Additionally, the mobile gaming market has seen a recent explosion with titles like PUBG Mobile and Fortnite raking in millions.
While we may not actually see a gaming phone from Nokia, it’s nonetheless interesting that the company was at least considering a gaming smartphone. After all, it’s not the first time that Nokia’s made a gaming-centered smartphone (remember the N-Gage?). Hopefully, this one won’t be shaped like a taco.
